“I was born normal with Apgar score 10/10 at 1 and 5 mins but my normal life lasted less than 5 days...”

Sharing the story of our dearest son who became profoundly disabled as he didn't receive a simple treatment in time as a baby but always accepts the very many pains that he endures in his everyday life with big charming smiles, the smiles that give his parents the vital strength to keep going. We hope that these information serve to:

  • Providing information to to-be parents
  • Reminding the many health professionals the serious danger posed by Jaundice
  • Sharing our experiences with those unfortunate parents out there

Letter from Chief Exec - Lessons learned?

In April 2011 I had written a letter to the hospital detailing with reasons why I thought my son didn't get the right care and treatment from the hospital and why the hospital was responsible for my sons condition. The Chief Executive of the hospital replied back to me in Oct 2011. The followings are excerpts from his letter.

There are a few names and faces that come to our mind, specially that of the consultant in charge who had suspended further bilirubin monitoring just after 24 hours of our son's life in spite of being in a risk group as well as the levels were still going up; also the unknown tall mid-aged women with a bunch of keys hanging from her waist whom I spoken to at the ward's reception, just before we left the hospital, with my concerns about my son's jaundice who came over to see my son and said "He is fine, his colour is because of yours", after looking up at me! We know, no one had any bad feeling and wanted to cause any harm. We just hope that they learnt lessons from their mistakes and follow the hospital norms and guidelines in the future. It was their ignorance and negligence that led to our son's condition. We wish them well and hope that they themselves wouldn't have to go through in their life time what we are having to; we would be happy if lessons were learnt from the mistakes with our dear son and the knowledge and experience be used to create healthy babies instead of tumbling lives and 'creating' more remorseful parents who wouldn't even be able to die peacefully!
